What's included in a house move
A house move with The Furniture Man covers everything from the first item out the door to the last one placed in your new home. On a typical job we:
- Wrap furniture in moving blankets and shrink wrap before it leaves the room, so corners, legs and fabric are protected through doorways and on the truck.
- Load with a tail lift, which is safer for heavy pieces like fridges, washing machines and solid timber furniture than carrying them up a ramp.
- Strap and pad every load so nothing shifts on the drive.
- Place furniture in the right rooms at the new address, not just inside the front door.
- Dismantle and reassemble beds, tables and other furniture where needed.
The right truck and team for your home
Our trucks range from 4.5 to 8 tonnes, all with tail lifts. A smaller truck suits a unit or a small home; the 8 tonne truck suits larger family homes, so most moves are done in one trip. We send two or three movers depending on how much there is and how hard the access is. Stairs, long driveways and apartment lifts all add time. We'll recommend the truck and team on your quote, so you're not paying for more than you need.
Packing, unpacking and materials
You can pack yourself, or we can pack for you. Many customers ask us to do just the kitchen, glassware and other fragile items, and pack the rest themselves. We supply shrink wrap, bubble wrap and tape, and we can unpack at the other end so you're not living out of boxes for weeks.
Apartments, walk-ups and tricky access
Apartment moves are a big part of our work. We're used to booking lifts, working around loading bays and carrying furniture up and down stairwells. If a piece won't fit in the lift or the stairwell, we can hoist it by rope over the balcony. See heavy item and rope access removals.
How much does a house move cost?
House moves are charged by the hour, with a 2-hour minimum and no extra charge on weekends or public holidays. With the 4.5 tonne truck, two movers cost $140 an hour and three movers $185 an hour; with the 8 tonne truck it's $160 or $200 an hour. As a guide, a 2-bedroom house usually costs $600-$900 and a 3-4 bedroom house $700-$1,300. Blankets, shrink wrap and bubble wrap are included at no extra cost. All prices exclude GST. How to get a quote
- Send us both addresses (suburbs are enough to start), your preferred date and a list or photos of the main items.
- Tell us about access: stairs, lifts, parking, and anything very heavy or fragile.
- We reply with the expected hours, the price and the truck and team we recommend.
Common questions
Can you move us on a weekend or public holiday?
Yes, at the same rates as weekdays, with no weekend or public holiday surcharge. Same-day moves are sometimes possible, subject to availability. Book early for end-of-month dates, when leases finish and demand is highest.
Do I need to be there on moving day?
Someone needs to be at both addresses to let us in and show us where things go. It can be a friend or family member if you can't be there yourself.
Do you take apart beds and tables?
Yes. We dismantle beds, tables and other furniture that needs it to get through doors, and put it back together at your new home.
